<p>The latest UNAIDS report of 2010 revealed that the rate of HIV infection of young persons in the age bracket of 15 -24 in the 15 most affected countries in the world has dropped. Sex health tips and education are seen as two of the most important elements in the prevention of HIVinfection.</p>

<p>With people being able to live up to ten years with HIV before full blown AIDS develops, many don’t show any symptoms for the first period, and if they have not been tested, will unknowingly spread the disease, if they don’t receive and follow the sex and health tips in HIVeducation programs to limit the risk of infection to others.</p>
<p>A drop of 25% in HIV infection has been reported in the mentioned group of countries, showing that through adequate HIV programs, which include education regarding safe sex and health tips, it is possible to reduce the rate of infection. The challenge is to keep the downward trend in motion. With more than 25 million persons already deceased because of HIV infection since 1981, it becomes apparent that HIV/AIDS infections cannot be ignored. With previous epidemics such as theBlack Death a few centuries ago, the virus could work itself out, but with HIV/AIDS the only way to stop such spreading is through prevention and sex education to help slow down and eventually beat the disease.</p>
<p>With more than 33 million people infected and living with the disease around the world, of which a large percentage is in Southern Africa, it also becomes apparent that the battle is long from being over. Education programs should be included in schools and apart from active counselling, it is important to extend the awareness of HIV/AIDS to colleges and include practical safe sex health tips.</p>
<p>Universal Access Targets In 2010</p>
<p>A lot of positive strides have been made towards universal access to HIV/AIDS care and support in recent years. The fourth annual report as released in September 2010 by the UN Aids division to track the progress made in ensuring universal access to such programs, tracked progress in 144 of the low to middle income groups for the period of 2009.</p>
<p>Some of the key findings in the report regarding universal access to HIV care and support programs for Africa are briefly shared below.</p>
<p>In general, as many as 15 of the countries were able to increase the access to essential HIV/AIDS related services to 80%, bringing them closer to the target of universal access. The percentage, however, only relates to HIV positive pregnant females, but it does show significant progress in limiting the spreading of the disease to the children of infected women.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Fourteen countries succeeded in reaching the target of 80% of HIV infected children having access to essential treatments. Only eight countries reached the target of universal access to antiretroviral treatments for the adult population.</p>
<p>The above figures show that it is not an impossible target to get universal access to essential HIV care andsupport services for children, adults, and pregnant women groups. HIV is a universal disease, which because of the international travelling trends, cannot be localised to a specific region. Because people interact as social beings, and also because the disease can linger for up to ten years before developing in full blown AIDS, it is not a disease that can be quarantined. With this in mind then, governments must take responsibility in setting up facilities and ensuring access to treatments for infected persons.</p>
<p>In Southern Africa, the area hardest hit by HIV infections, the access to treatment has been increased to 41%; it was previously only 32%. Although a positive step indeed, it is still far away from the target of universal access needed to be able to halt the ongoing battle of the virus.</p>
