Yes ladies, it’s one of those problems most of us will realize in our lifetime, flabby upper arms. Have you ever lifted up your arm to wave at someone and you can feel the flab jiggling long after your movement has stopped? You are certainly not alone. This is an issue that plagues women and it’s related to the usual three suspects: age, hormones and genes. Women should pay attention to this area unless you want to wear long sleeves forever to hide them you can learn what works to help tone them up.

This is an area that women commonly neglect when exercising. A lot of the focus tends to be on the area from the waist to the knees. The large group of muscles in the legs and the abdominals are never neglected. Doing a cardiovascular workout you can’t help but hit these areas on a treadmill, elliptical or stair climber but there is little focus on the upper arms during this type of workout. However to combat the airborne arm flab you need to engage in resistance exercises that target this problem area. Training the triceps can give you some toned muscles and sexy arms you will be happy to show off. Conversely if you do not use consistent resistance training the arm muscles are sure to lose tone and texture and you’ll have those wings flapping in the wind every time you raise your arm.

Your triceps make up two thirds of your upper arm so keeping them in shape will enhance the look or your arms greatly. It is strongly suggested for this problem area you train your triceps together with the oppositional muscle biceps at least twice a week. Exercises that engage this muscle group include extensions, dips and push ups to name three common and effective ones. The extension move can be done standing with arms tucked by your side extending your arm back, seated with your arms by your ears and dropping your arms behind your head or even lying down, you can hold a weight and extend it across your chest or even a bar and drop it down just above your head. These can be found with direction under the terms kickbacks, French curl, arm extensions and head caves. The key to all of these is holding your upper arm stationary and movement is from the elbow down so you are working the triceps effectively. Dips are another great exercise for this part of the arm and you can increase or decrease the difficulty depending on how close our feet are to your bottom. Raising your feet up on a bench and dipping below can further increase the challenge. Push ups with your hands in close will force you to engage the triceps even more than a standard push up. Even a bench press with arms in tight is a great exercise for toning the arms as well.

As with all training begin each set using extremely light weight to warm up the muscle group. Do a set of approximately 12-16 reps in a moderate pace. When you increase your weight make sure you have proper form. If you are swinging your arms during an extension you will be missing the targeted muscle group. If you need to drop down the weight and focus on doing it properly! If you do any exercise incorrectly you will never gain the full effects and put yourself at risk for injury. If you need to ask a professional for guidance or find some visual aids from books or online to make sure you have the technique down pat.

Don’t ignore this part of the body when you go through your regular routine. Make it a focus, and make sure you are doing it correctly and you’ll soon be able to say goodbye with confidence, and even when you are wearing a sleeveless top!

Fitness bootcamps look to be the hottest trend going in the fitness industry today, especially in light of the current economic climate. With the financial angst that many are experiencing, finding a more cost effective way to achieve and maintain fitness levels is a major priority. It’s a good time to be in the personal trainer certification business.

If there was ever a win-win scenario for fitness enthusiasts the group-training model is it. For only a fraction of the cost of typical one-on-one rates bootcamp participants are able to access personal training support in a unique and dynamic team environment. Not only does this exercise context provide better social support and accountability, it helps people reach their fitness goals affordably.

The financial upside to group training and bootcamp style workouts is certainly not the only reason to consider this fitness option. In terms of our other most-coveted resource, time, the efficiency of a bootcamp fitness program make it a more schedule-friendly approach to getting fit. In an article describing some of the hows and whys of bootcamp training, Paige Waehner makes this point: “Boot camp workouts are efficient because you work your entire body– heart and muscles–by going from one exercise to another with no rest.” By eliminating down time and the need to swap out equipment, machines, weights, etc this workout method can be streamlined to get the job done quickly as well as intensely.

Bootcamp workouts are kinder on the pocketbook and easier to squeeze into a busy schedule. One more significant advantage to this method of reaching fitness goals is that it can be a lot of fun. Do not underestimate the power of fun and enjoyment when it comes to maintaining a fitness routine. The number one killer of exercise plans, routines, and resolutions is the lack of accountability and motivation. When you workout in a non-competitive and supportive environment the likelihood of sticking with the routine to point of reaching goals and maintaining fitness levels is certainly higher than without.

Perhaps fitness boot camp will become a required component of personal training certification in the near future.

For as long as anyone can remember, computers have been used as tools to conduct work or to entertain. However, thanks to the huge amount of interest drummed up by the Nintendo Wii home video game console, and their award-winning Wii Fit video games, more and more computer software manufacturers are taking a look at the need for fitness-related software. The question that many people are asking is, How can a home computer duplicate the unique interface developed by the Wii through their wireless remote controllers and the Wii Balance Board? Let’s take a look at how your home computer can help you stay in shape this year.

For years, fitness software for your PC was simply diagnostic in nature. You could use these programs to record how many sit-ups you did that day, how many calories you took in, and what your projected goals should be. The result of such software research is Runner’s Log and Cyclist’s Log. These easy-to-use programs originally started out for the Palm Pilot, so a runner or cyclist could record what they did as they were in the thick of it. The software has proven to be so successful, however, that a port was created for the PC and the Mac. You can do everything mentioned above, as well as create graphics, charts, and print-outs of your progress day to day or week to week. Best of all, this program, and the other programs in this series, are shareware, which means they are absolutely free to try and use.

Obviously, most of the top fitness programs available aren’t going to be free, however, many are worth the investment. A good example is Yourself! Fitness. This software suite simulates what it is like to have your own personal trainer, but at a fraction of the cost. Oftentimes, when asked, people will list having a personal trainer as the number one reason why they joined a gym. With Yourself! Fitness, you won’t need to. The workouts here are customizable, dynamic, and a lot of fun. There is even a nutritional aspect to this software, as well, which ensures you are doing more than just sit-ups and push-ups.

Since more and more people are using Blackberries and iPhones these days, many computer companies are rushing to get applications built for these portable devices. A quick search of fitness-related iPhone applications reveals quite a selection, including a hilarious and often head-shaking version called Restaurant Nutrition. This program pulls back the curtain on every value meal at every fast food chain in the United States. Many of us give into fast food during a moment of weakness, but with Restaurant Nutrition sitting on our iPhone, at least we can order the items that have the least amount of fat, and believe it or not, it usually isn’t the salads.

Staying fit in the early 21st century is easier than ever with these amazing and fun to use applications for computer systems everywhere.
